Rachel, Maria & Sylvia describe their recent trip to Sri Lanka, where they helped to build a toilet block, paint a house and dig a well...

Having looked at footage of previous trips we thought we knew what to expect. We were organised, immunised, had done our homework and shopped for supplies, toys and trowels :))

Everything from the outset blew our expectations. The location was beautifully tropical and the people were so kind and welcoming of our group. We certainly hit the jackpot with our team of volunteers and bonded quickly, working together for the duration in such good humour and high spirits, like we’d known each other for years.

What we didn’t expect was to fall in love so completely with the whole project and the children we met. The fun we had with them over the days was heartwarming. We spent the afternoons having ice-creams, playing games, attending their sports day and seeing them in their schools. It really was a true eye-opener to how The Dust Projects’ work has been such a life-changer to the children and their community, providing them with a safe, loving environment to grow and develop. It was a tough slog working in the heat and the days were long but we wouldn’t change a second of it and would go back in a heartbeat.
